It all began in Sedona…

Three women dressed in cold-weather gear

Karen Smith-Racicot (Tall Karen), Karen Justice (Short Karen), Rebecca LaChance

We are widows who enjoy traveling together and finding new adventures. And, there we were, sitting on a front porch with an outdoor fireplace, huddled under blankets, drinking wine and taking in the beauty of the red rocks rising in the distance. Little did we know what was in store for us.

Notice how we’re dressed in the picture above? Yep, it was February, cold and snowy. Definitely not the warm place the Karens thought we would be visiting. (If you are wondering whether I reminded them about this "weather surprise," the answer is "yes.")

Our conversations brought us round to our experiences as widows. Tall Karen, the youngest of us, had been a widow the longest. Short Karen was the eldest in age and the middle-timer in terms of widowhood. Rebecca was the relative newbie widow, fitting in between the two in age and height.

We discussed our experiences as widows and how there were so many things we hadn’t known. No one had ever told us about what we might experience, what to expect, or how to take care of ourselves. Right then and there, we said, “We should write a book.”

And that singular sentence has brought us —and you— to this moment.

Welcome!
